Receiving Reiki is a wonderful way to be energised and relax on many levels and suitable for all family members, including your four legged family members.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is essentially energy. It is energy we all have and a Reiki practitioner works with openness and detachment to allow this energy to flow from 'A' to 'B'.
Reiki, a Japanese word, can be translated to mean 'Universal Life Energy' - the energetic natural intelligence of the universe.
A Reiki practitioner is someone who has taken time to receive in depth this energy and teachings about Reiki from more experienced practitioners, and let the effects of this be in their lives for their own wellbeing before working with others. If we take the analogy of an electrical wire; one that has been left to rust and rot, that has too many scratches and breaks, is less effective than a well maintained wire to transport energy. A Reiki practitioner takes responsibility to maintain the effectiveness of their own energy flow to benefit themselves and others.
Reiki, as we know and use it, is a simple means of allowing this energy to flow from Reiki practitioner to another for beneficial wellbeing.
As Reiki can calm and boost energy, it not only has healing benefits for people but also for pets and other animals. Calmed, and with their energy boosted, animals are readily able to self-heal.
Because energy fields are on many subtle levels it is also possible to 'send' Reiki to situations and over distance - as 'distant healing'.
It is always vital that the practitioner works with detachment and not an intent - which could interfere with receiving optimum and true benefit.
The History of Reiki
Reiki has been taught and used in its current form in the West since the 1970s but its origins can be traced back much further - not surprisingly due to its nature!
There are indications that something very similar to Reiki was in use in ancient Tibet through the Buddhist traditions. More recently towards the end of the 19th Century and start of the 20th Century it was pioneered by Mikao Usui (1865 - 1926). Usui spent his early life in a Japanese Buddhist Monastry. His adult life included the usual activities of human life: jobs, marriage, parenthood, yet he remained devoted to his roots of spirituality and healing. Through meditative practices and experiences he gained clarity about a way to enable this universal life energy to benefit our health and wellbeing through a hands-on practice.
Usui taught this practice to a number of people in Japan who in turn taught it to others including a Mrs Takata who took the practice to the USA. From there it spread internationally.
What to expect during a Reiki session
Reiki is given fully clothed in a one to one session. It is usually given and received as a hands-on practice. However, if it is more appropriatate, Reiki can be given and received a few inches above the surface of the body. This is just as effective as this is stiill within the energy field of the body.
A session lasts an hour; I allow slightly longer (up to 15 minutes) to allow you time to leave in a relaxed and alert state. Some people like to recieve Reiki for more than an hour in one session, if you feel this would suit you please contact me to discuss.
You will usually have the opportunity to lie down to fully relax and receive optimum benefit from your Reiki session.
If you think your pet or other animal would benefit from Reiki, please contact me.
